BACKGROUND

Garvy was created to be THE end-to-end resourcing platform for the BIPoC startup ecosystem. Solving for the financial, functional and social capital needs of minority startups, all in one place that is continuously accessible.

OVERVIEW

The BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) startup ecosystem faces multifaceted challenges that intersect across talent acquisition, employer engagement, and investor participation. Historically rooted systemic barriers have contributed to disparities in access to opportunities, funding, and representation for BIPOC entrepreneurs, employees, and investors alike. In 2021, the total VC funding in Tech was $330B and just $4.3B went to black and LatinX companies. Lack of capital (the 1% problem) the state of VC funding for Black & Latinx-led startups

THE GOAL

To create a platform where BIPOC Founders, Investors and Talent can get increased visibility and prioritized consideration for funding, partnerships, and resources to build better startups.

THE CHALLENGE

Garvy was designed to combat the blatant lack of progress within venture circles that stifle growth and the lack of access to quality investment opportunities in emerging BIPoC-led ventures. By connecting founders, investors, talent and allies, it intends to realize a sum infinitely greater than its parts. 

MARKET RESEARCH

To kick things off, I conducted primary research to gain a better understanding of the startup ecosystem. This encompassed me examining a range of investment, funding and talent platforms. The main aim was to understand how these platforms work.

I conducted interviews on angel investors, Venture capitalist, Start-up CEOs, and Tech talents to have an understanding of the goals and painpoints each group have. Also, these helped me tie the user goals to the business goals.

SOLUTION

The solution involved coming up with a product that adequately bridges the gap between founders, investors and talent of color by primarily focusing on the needs that affects each audience and catering to those needs whilst maintaining keen importance on how users will interact with the product easily.
